Epworth HealthCare chose Energy Makeovers to complete a LED upgrade of their lighting system to in order to save over $170,000 a year. Read about it here.
With 8 hospitals around Melbourne open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, it took a steady hand to seamlessly upgrade the 5,000 fluorescent tubes throughout Epworth Healthcare, Victoria’s largest not for profit private health care group.
It was a vital operation, with the hospital group facing skyrocketing energy usage and costs.
Patient comfort and practicality was paramount. Energy Makeovers was required to design and install an LED lighting upgrade that generated good levels of lighting, while offering a pleasant and soothing experience for patients. Best-in-class LEDs were chosen and then trialled in strategic locations so hospital staff could experience the new lighting before the full rollout of the new LED tubes.
The new lighting was scheduled with precision around specific needs of hospital staff and patients. Time management was critical – tubes in individual rooms had to be changed over in the minutes when rooms were unoccupied.
The result? No one will miss the inevitable and annoying flickering of old fluorescent tubes in the hospital waiting room. Lighting levels have universally improved, and the the cost of running the tube lights has reduced by more than 50% – which means an annual energy cost saving of at least $170,000.
The benefits keep coming: the new LED tubes have a design life of more than 50,000 hours, which means hospital maintenance staff will not need to replace any tubes for a long time, leaving them to deal with more important hospital functions. And importantly, the health of the Earth has improved, with a significant decrease in carbon emissions.
