Selecting the correct tank size is one of the most important steps when upgrading to a heat pump hot water system. A unit that’s too small will run out of hot water quickly, while a system that’s too large may waste energy and increase your running costs.
The recommended tank size depends mainly on the number of bedrooms in your home, which is often a good indicator of household size and hot water demand:
Size recommendations are based on guidelines from VEU. You can read their guidelines here.

A heat pump hot water system is designed to absorb heat from the surrounding air using a special thermal fluid that works even in cold weather. The system compresses the fluid to increase its temperature and transfers that heat to the stored water, using less energy.
Estimates from Sustainability Victoria show that these systems use approximately 60% – 75% less electricity** than a traditional electric hot water system, potentially reducing your electricity costs.

Year 1 Start saving on bills immediately |
Year 5 Typical payback point |
Year 10 Net savings often exceed |
Year 15 System lifespan: |
Because heat pump systems slash running costs, most households in Victoria recover the initial installation cost within 5–7 years.
When paired with available government-backed incentives or $0 upfront finance options, the payback period can be even shorter.
Over the expected 10–15 year lifespan of the system, many households see a return on investment (ROI) of two to three times the upfront cost, making a heat pump one of the most cost-effective energy upgrades you can make.
Your property needs to be at least 2 years old
Homes and businesses
You must be replacing an existing electric or gas hot water system with an approved heat pump hot water system.
The system must be approved under the VEU scheme and installed by a VEU-accredited provider such as Energy Makeovers.
Every hot water heat pump we install comes with a comprehensive up to 7-year Product Warranty.
This covers both the system and its key components, giving you confidence that your investment is protected for the long term.
With Energy Makeovers, you can enjoy reliable hot water and the assurance that support is only a phone call away if you ever need it.
Choosing the right hot water heat pump for your home is an important decision. Each system has different features, capacities, and performance ratings that can influence efficiency, running costs, and suitability for your household.
Below you’ll find detailed product specification sheets for two of our most popular and approved heat pump hot water systems. These documents include technical details such as capacity, Coefficient of Performance (COP), noise levels, warranty information, and installation requirements.

A solar hot water heater uses the sun’s energy to heat water through a solar energy system. A heat pump extracts heat from the air, ground, or water using electricity to warm the water, making it efficient year-round, even in colder climates. Heat pumps are generally more versatile. The choice between the two depends on your budget and energy considerations.
In theory, yes. We give our customers the option to choose a brand or product they prefer. However, selecting a product that is not in stock may significantly delay the completion of your hot water heat pump upgrade.
Also note: The hot water heat pump unit must be listed in the product registry of the ESC (Essential Services Commission). Otherwise it will not be eligible for VEU rebates.
While it’s rare, issues can sometimes arise. During installation, our certified plumber will thoroughly test your system to ensure it’s functioning properly and meets your satisfaction. No. There is a co-payment required. There are no free hot water heat pump installation rebates in the VEU program. Therefore, all Victorians–whether businesses or residential–will be required to pay an upfront fee for a hot water system upgrade.
A hot water heat pump works exactly the same way your air condition split system does to warm up your house:
1. A fan in your outdoor unit will draw surrounding air.
2. The heat in the air is absorbed by a refrigerant flowing within the unit transferring the heat from the air to the water in the water tank providing your hot water.
And yes, our range of hot water heat pumps also work in winter as the refrigerant has an anti-freeze that prevents it from freezing.
In comparison to other systems, such as an electric boiler, they use less electricity since heat pumps transfer heat as opposed to generating it. This can reduce carbon emissions and reach efficiency levels close to 600% (meaning they deliver up to 6 times as much energy as they consume).
We recommend:
200 Lt unit for 1-4 people
300Lt unit for 5+ people
It is important to keep in mind if you are considering a family expansion in the future (eg.: kids or pets), or if you tend to have multiple guests at home. If you are unsure, our team of experts will be happy to guide you – just complete the form below to receive a call back.
Absolutely! If you have solar panels, we will connect your hot water heat pump to your existing energy supply so your solar panels can power your unit.
Our hot water heat pump range comes with a 5-year product warranty, and Energy Makeovers offers a 2-year labour warranty.
In Victoria, households can access support through the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program, the Solar Victoria Hot Water Program, and the Federal Small Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). Together, these incentives can reduce upfront costs by thousands, making heat pump systems more affordable.
Yes. Energy Makeovers offers $0 upfront installation by applying incentives directly to your quote.
Yes, but the property owner must approve the installation. Many landlords agree because upgrading improves their property’s energy rating, makes it more attractive to tenants, and lowers running costs.
Yes. Your existing hot water system is safely decommissioned and removed as part of the upgrade. This is also a requirement of the VEU program, ensuring that inefficient systems are replaced with approved high-performance heat pumps. You can read more about the program on their website, here.
No. Under current program rules, homes must generally be at least two years old to qualify for government incentives. This ensures that only inefficient systems are replaced rather than brand-new installations.
Most installations are completed in half a day. More complex jobs, such as those where old gas lines need to be capped, may take longer; however, our team will confirm the expected timeframe during your assessment.
Yes. Modern heat pumps are available in sizes ranging from 150L to over 300L, making them suitable for households of all sizes. For families with four or more members, we recommend a 300L system to ensure a consistent supply.
Today’s hot water heat pump systems are designed to work efficiently even in cold conditions. Using advanced compressors, they can extract heat from the air at temperatures as low as -5°C, which covers our winter.
Switching from an electric or gas system to a heat pump can save up to 70% on hot water energy costs. For an average Victorian household, that equates to $300–$900 per year, depending on household size and energy use.
***Data sourced from Victorian Government Sustainability Victoria, September 2024, Compare water heating running costs. Annual cost estimations and savings are a guide only and based on a Melbourne household with a heat pump hot water system, with four people using 150 litres per day, and electricity tariffs based on a general (or peak) rate of 29.3 c/kWh, and an off-peak rate of 21.6 c/kWh.
Replacing an inefficient electric or gas system with a heat pump can add NatHERS points to your home’s star rating. This improves comfort, reduces running costs, and increases property value under Victoria’s minimum efficiency standards.
Plus, increasing the energy efficiency of your home can increase its value by up to $100,000. Read more here.
According to Sustainability Victoria’s water heating running cost and emissions calculator, heat pumps produce far fewer greenhouse gas emissions than gas or electric resistance systems. Over a 10-year period, this difference adds up to several tonnes of avoided CO₂ for the average household (source).
Yes. A heat pump is most effective when paired with solar panels and a battery. This allows you to run the system on self-generated electricity during the day and store power at night, maximising savings and independence from the grid.
Once your installation is complete, your incentives are locked in. Even if program rules change in the future, you will not lose the benefits you received at the time of installation. All warranties will remain in place.
The installation team electrician and plumber were on time and done a fabulous job. Thanks

I looked at many reviews from multiple companies that installed hot water systems under the government rebate. Price was the main factor for me and the main concern was dodgy installers...Aya from Energy Makeovers guided me through the entire process...The price offered bet their competitors and the standard of installation was the most crucial of all - good quality install. I highly recommend Energy Makeover and have already recommended them to my friends.
