Choosing the Right Hot Water Heat Pump Size for Your Home

Selecting the correct tank size is one of the most important steps when upgrading to a heat pump hot water system. A unit that’s too small will run out of hot water quickly, while a system that’s too large may waste energy and increase your running costs.

The recommended tank size depends mainly on the number of bedrooms in your home, which is often a good indicator of household size and hot water demand:

  • 1–2 bedrooms: 150–225 litres
Perfect for singles, couples, or smaller households with moderate hot water use.
  • 3 bedrooms: 225–300 litres
Ideal for average families, ensuring there’s enough hot water for showers, washing, and appliances without running out.
  • 4 or more bedrooms: 300 litres
Best for large families or shared homes where multiple showers, laundry loads, and appliances may be used at the same time.

Why Tank Size Matters

  • Efficiency: A correctly sized system ensures the heat pump only runs as much as needed, keeping energy bills low.
  • Comfort: Right-sized storage means reliable hot water at peak times.
  • Longevity: A system working at the right load will last longer and require less maintenance.

Size recommendations are based on guidelines from VEU. You can read their guidelines here.

You could save up to 75%** on your home hot water costs

A heat pump hot water system is designed to absorb heat from the surrounding air using a special thermal fluid that works even in cold weather. The system compresses the fluid to increase its temperature and transfers that heat to the stored water, using less energy.

Estimates from Sustainability Victoria show that these systems use approximately 60% – 75% less electricity** than a traditional electric hot water system, potentially reducing your electricity costs.

Because heat pump systems slash running costs, most households in Victoria recover the initial installation cost within 5–7 years.

When paired with available government-backed incentives or $0 upfront finance options, the payback period can be even shorter.

Over the expected 10–15 year lifespan of the system, many households see a return on investment (ROI) of two to three times the upfront cost, making a heat pump one of the most cost-effective energy upgrades you can make.

FAQ's to consider...

Who is eligible for the hot water heat pump incentive in Victoria?

You must be the owner-occupier of the applicable property
The household’s combined taxable income must be less than $210,000
The property must be valued at less than $3m
The property has not had a solar battery or a Hot Water Incentive previously
The existing hot water system must be more than 3 years old.
We have more information about the hot water heat pump rebate, here.

What is the difference between a solar hot water heater and a heat pump?

A solar hot water heater uses the sun’s energy to heat water through a solar energy system. A heat pump extracts heat from the air, ground, or water using electricity to warm the water, making it efficient year-round, even in colder climates. Heat pumps are generally more versatile. The choice between the two depends on your budget and energy considerations.

Can I choose the brand/manufacturer of hot water heat pump that is installed?

In theory, yes. We give our customers the option to choose a brand or product they prefer. However, selecting a product that is not in stock may significantly delay the completion of your hot water heat pump upgrade.
Also note: The hot water heat pump unit must be listed in the product registry of the ESC (Essential Services Commission). Otherwise it will not be eligible for VEU rebates.

What happens if there’s a problem with my system after installation?

While it’s rare, issues can sometimes arise. During installation, our certified plumber will thoroughly test your system to ensure it’s functioning properly and meets your satisfaction. Should any issues occur afterwards, our team will be happy to resolve them and will promptly attend to your property within the warranty period.

How can I ensure Energy Makeovers are the right hot water heat pump installer?

This is a great question and one we encourage you to ask! First, we have been in business since 2008, so our warranties mean something. Secondly, we have almost 4.5/5 star rating on Google from hundreds of reviews and have been an Accredited Provider through the VEU program since its inception. We also have a Case Study page we’d love you to visit to read some of our success stories. We’re Australian-owned, based and run, and our team are dedicated to ensuring the products and installation supplied are of the highest quality. We remain brand agnostic to ensure our customers receive only the best.

Is it a FREE hot water Upgrade?

No. There is a co-payment required. There are no free hot water heat pump installation rebates in the VEU program. Therefore, all Victorians–whether businesses or residential–will be required to pay an upfront fee for a hot water system upgrade.

How do how water heat pumps work?

A hot water heat pump works exactly the same way your air condition split system does to warm up your house:
1. A fan in your outdoor unit will draw surrounding air.
2. The heat in the air is absorbed by a refrigerant flowing within the unit transferring the heat from the air to the water in the water tank providing your hot water.

And yes, our range of hot water heat pumps also work in winter as the refrigerant has an anti-freeze that prevents it from freezing.

Why is a hot water heat pump energy efficient?

In comparison to other systems, such as an electric boiler, they use less electricity since heat pumps transfer heat as opposed to generating it. This can reduce carbon emissions and reach efficiency levels close to 600% (meaning they deliver up to 6 times as much energy as they consume).

What size heat pump will I need?

We recommend:
200 Lt unit for 1-4 people
300Lt unit for 5+ people

It is important to keep in mind if you are considering a family expansion in the future (eg.: kids or pets), or if you tend to have multiple guests at home. If you are unsure, our team of experts will be happy to guide you – just complete the form below to receive a call back.

Can my hot water heat pump work in conjunction with solar panels?

Absolutely! If you have solar panels, we will connect your hot water heat pump to your existing energy supply so your solar panels can power your unit.

What is the warranty period on a hot water heat pump?

Our hot water heat pump range comes with a 5-year product warranty, and Energy Makeovers offers a 2-year labour warranty.

What incentives are available for upgrading to a heat pump hot water system?

In Victoria, households can access support through the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program, the Solar Victoria Hot Water Program, and the Federal Small Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). Together, these incentives can reduce upfront costs by thousands, making heat pump systems more affordable.

Can I access finance or $0 upfront options for my hot water upgrade?

Yes. Energy Makeovers offers $0 upfront installation by applying incentives directly to your quote.

Can renters apply for a hot water heat pump upgrade?

Yes, but the property owner must approve the installation. Many landlords agree because upgrading improves their property’s energy rating, makes it more attractive to tenants, and lowers running costs.

Do I need to remove my old gas or electric system before installing a heat pump?

Yes. Your existing hot water system is safely decommissioned and removed as part of the upgrade. This is also a requirement of the VEU program, ensuring that inefficient systems are replaced with approved high-performance heat pumps. You can read more about the program on their website, here.

Is my home eligible if it’s less than two years old?

No. Under current program rules, homes must generally be at least two years old to qualify for government incentives. This ensures that only inefficient systems are replaced rather than brand-new installations.

How long does it take to install a hot water heat pump?

Most installations are completed in half a day. More complex jobs, such as those where old gas lines need to be capped, may take longer; however, our team will confirm the expected timeframe during your assessment.

Will a heat pump provide enough hot water for a large family?

Yes. Modern heat pumps are available in sizes ranging from 150L to over 300L, making them suitable for households of all sizes. For families with four or more members, we recommend a 300L system to ensure a consistent supply.

How do heat pumps perform in cold Victorian winters?

Today’s hot water heat pump systems are designed to work efficiently even in cold conditions. Using advanced compressors, they can extract heat from the air at temperatures as low as -5°C, which covers our winter.

How much can a heat pump reduce my household energy bills?

Switching from an electric or gas system to a heat pump can save up to 70% on hot water energy costs. For an average Victorian household, that equates to $300–$900 per year, depending on household size and energy use.

***Data sourced from Victorian Government Sustainability Victoria, September 2024, Compare water heating running costs. Annual cost estimations and savings are a guide only and based on a Melbourne household with a heat pump hot water system, with four people using 150 litres per day, and electricity tariffs based on a general (or peak) rate of 29.3 c/kWh, and an off-peak rate of 21.6 c/kWh.

What impact does a hot water heat pump have on my home’s energy rating?

Replacing an inefficient electric or gas system with a heat pump can add NatHERS points to your home’s star rating. This improves comfort, reduces running costs, and increases property value under Victoria’s minimum efficiency standards.

Plus, increasing the energy efficiency of your home can increase its value by up to $100,000. Read more here.

How much CO₂ can I save each year by switching from gas to a heat pump?

According to Sustainability Victoria’s water heating running cost and emissions calculator, heat pumps produce far fewer greenhouse gas emissions than gas or electric resistance systems. Over a 10-year period, this difference adds up to several tonnes of avoided CO₂ for the average household (source).

Can I combine a hot water heat pump with solar panels and a battery?

Yes. A heat pump is most effective when paired with solar panels and a battery. This allows you to run the system on self-generated electricity during the day and store power at night, maximising savings and independence from the grid.

What happens if government incentives change after I install my system?

Once your installation is complete, your incentives are locked in. Even if program rules change in the future, you will not lose the benefits you received at the time of installation. All warranties will remain in place.

Fantastic experience from start to finish! Professional and friendly, knowledgeable about the product and the government rebate through Solar Vic ... highly recommend new heat pump hot water system (very energy efficient) and Energy Makeovers.

Tresca Cullen

Google Review

I looked at many reviews from multiple companies that installed hot water systems under the government rebate. Price was the main factor for me and the main concern was dodgy installers...Aya from Energy Makeovers guided me through the entire process...The price offered bet their competitors and the standard of installation was the most crucial of all - good quality install. I highly recommend Energy Makeover and have already recommended them to my friends.
