How long do LED globes last in reality? How long are we talking? Average lifespan is around 20 years! You've got some time. Read more.
If you have considered upgrading your lights to LED you might have heard that LEDs last longer than globes like incandescent or halogen, but perhaps you’re curious about how much longer. So, how long do LED light bulbs work in reality?
It’s a great question and the answer obviously depends on the globes you’re asking about. In this case, we’ll answer in reference to the globes we’re most often asked to upgrade – downlights.
Halogen downlights are an inefficient, energy-guzzling, outdated light. They require a lot of energy because most of the energy use goes into heating the elements to generate light. In comparison, LEDs are very efficient and use a fraction of the energy to generate the same level of light. Lighting technology has improved since halogen downlights and the globes no longer need to ‘heat’ the elements to glow, so they’re safer, cheaper and – more relevant to this question – they LAST LONGER.
The typical lifespan of a halogen downlight is around 1-2 years. If you have halogen downlights in your home you’ll notice they ‘blow’ every so often, you may even have some dead globes in your ceiling right now. Halogen downlights also dim over time as they age. So your older globes will be a lot dimmer than any newer globes you have since installed.
The typical lifespan of an LED globe is 10-20 years, dependent on use, and they don’t dim over time. A light that has been in the ceiling and running for 5 years will be as bright as a globe that’s newly installed.
If you have a house with halogen downlights installed throughout, it’s likely you’re replacing globes on a regular basis, but if you install LEDs throughout, it’s unlikely you will EVER have to replace them – you’re more likely to move or renovate in that time!
So, it’s definitely worth the time to upgrade to LED. Especially in Victoria while the FREE LED Upgrade offer is available. This offer will end in June 2021, so take advantage now, before it’s gone.
