Scotland and the world’s largest floating wind farm

New plans for a wind farm off the coast of Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, Scotland are under-way to build the world’s largest floating wind farm after receiving approval from the Scottish Government. This will be built in an area of deep water known as Buchanan Deep.

According to Statoil, the company behind the build, the project is to demonstrate cost efficient, low risk solutions on a commercial scale. The technology being used in the project has previously been tested in Norway.

Electricity from this project will be transported onshore to the local grid network and will have the capability of powering 20,000 homes.

“Floating wind represents a new, significant and increasingly competitive renewable energy source. Statoil’s objective with developing this pilot park is to demonstrate a commercial, utility-scale floating wind solution, to further increase the global market potential.

“We are proud to develop this unique project in Scotland, in a region that has optimal wind conditions, a strong supply chain within oil and gas and supportive public policies.” (Executive Vice President for New Energy Solutions at Statoil, Irene Rummelhoff)
