CSIRO released the results of a five year study that showed a significant proportion of the Australian public didn’t believe that climate change was happening.
Only 45.9% of those surveyed agreed with the scientific claims that humans are the cause of climate change. The rest of those surveyed either didn’t believe climate change is happening, weren’t sure if it was happening or simply believed that humans aren’t responsible and that any global environmental changes are natural.
Political leaning seems to have a significant effect to the results of this survey. “Barely one in four Coalition voters accepts climate change is mostly caused by humans, with more than half of Liberal voters believing changes to global temperatures are natural, according to a CSIRO survey.” (smh.com.au).
This month, 200 nations will meet in Paris at a summit to discuss climate change and how their countries can reduce it. Results of an Australian survey like this indicate that the new Turnbull-led government may face an uphill battle convincing Australians of the scientific evidence of climate change and encouraging the lifestyles of Australian residents towards energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions and decreasing our carbon footprints.
An interesting statistic in the survey is that some of those surveyed believed information provided by politicians are more credible over other information sources, like scientific journals. This is a telling reminder of how important it is to have a government in power that communicates facts regarding climate change.
