A new study published in February in the Journal for Climactic Change highlighted that deadly heat waves, previously seen once in twenty or so years could be seen on a annual basis if more is not done to combat greenhouse gas emissions.
Record breaking heatwaves hit
The study written by Claudia Tebaldi (of the National Center fr Atmospheric Research) and Michael Wehner (of the Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory) found, using their model, than in more than half of the world’s land area heat waves would become an annual event by 2075. The worst affected areas were the northern regions of North America, Europe, Asia and central South America.
The heat waves Victoria saw this summer and the hottest March days on record are a local reminder of the affect climate change is having on Melbournians.
