Why are LEDs free or subsidised through HEER?

What is the HEER program?

The HEER (home energy efficiency retrofits) method is a program launched under the NSW state government to address the carbon emissions produced by the state. The end goal is to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and help Australia reach its Paris Climate Agreement targets.

The HEER method encourages homes to upgrade from energy-hungry, or ‘inefficient’ appliances, to more modern and energy-efficient systems. Included in these incentives are upgrades on lighting systems to technology like LEDs.

Upgrading just 1 halogen downlight to an LED downlight reduces 85% of your energy needs from that one light. This is because a typical halogen downlight uses 30 watts of energy and an LED downlight only uses around 6 watts to produce the same amount of light.

Cost of running 20 LEDs per year: $53*
An annual saving of $326

LEDs are far superior:

✅ They use 85% less energy
✅ They’re cheaper to run
✅ Their lifespan is around 20,000 hours, versus a halogen downlight which usually dies within a year
✅ They’re safer. Halogen downlights get very hot and are usually around 300°C, but an LED only reaches temperatures of <80°C. You eliminate hotspots and reduce fire risks.
✅ Improve the look of your light fittings and the quality of light – halogens dull over time, LEDs do not.
✅ Reduce your carbon emissions – a small change can make a big impact on the future of Australia

How does such a small change have a big impact?

Upgrading from halogen downlights to LED downlights is such a small change, how can this really benefit NSW and Australia? It might seem like a small change, but thanks to hundreds of thousands of properties across Australia making small changes, like this, it makes a big impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

*Based on:  20 lamps at a 26c/kwh tariff, old lamps are 50w halogen, new lights are 7 w LED Volume of lamps, hours of operation 4 hours per day, 365 days per year. Energy cost of old lamps is $379 per year, energy cost of new lamps equals $53 p.a.
